The Municipality

A journey through history and nature in the heart of the Marche region

Montefano lies on a gentle hill between the Fiumicello and Menocchia valleys, on the border between the provinces of Macerata and Ancona, in the heart of the Marche region. From here, the view stretches from the Sibillini and Conero mountains to the Adriatic Sea. The landscape has been shaped over the centuries by the patient work of man and retains the agricultural charm of its origins: it is a diffused garden enriched by the harmony between nature and culture. Its long, narrow urban structure follows the ridge with balance, evoking the ideal design of a village suspended between earth and sky. The soul of the village is represented by the sense of proportion and beauty, in the link between rural tradition and architectural refinement, between hospitality and identity.

History

From the ancient town of Veragra to today's Montefano

Montefano has ancient origins: its name perhaps comes from “Monte del Fano,” that is to say “sacred place”, or from “Monte del Fauno.” It stands where a Picene settlement known as Veragra, once stood, before being destroyed by the Visigoths in the 5th century. The inhabitants founded the first nucleus of Montefano on the ridge known as Rocca. Today, the village has about 3,500 inhabitants and jealously preserves its identity symbolized by the coat of arms featuring a crenellated tower and an oak tree, a reminder of the hospitality offered to Giuliano della Rovere, the future Pope Julius II. Pope Marcellus II was also born here in 1501, who is remembered in Palestrina’s famous “Missa Papae Marcelli”. The urban symbol of the town is Via Carradori, the main street that connects the theatre, the square, and the historical buildings in an elegant architectural stage. It is a harmonious synthesis of styles and desires that reflects the cultural vocation and the sober, profound beauty that has animated Montefano for centuries.
